February 2012

From the Pastor

We’ve probably all commented about how quickly life passes. The truth of this observation becomes clear as the life of Jesus unfolds during the early months of the year. Not long ago we celebrated Jesus’ birth. Now the story of Jesus’ life and ministry unfolds at a swift pace. By the third Sunday in February we already discover, from the Gospel for that day, that Jesus foretells of his death.

The story develops as Jesus recruits his disciples. His teachings amaze them because he teaches them as one with authority – not as the scribes.  His healing ministry begins by setting a person free from the demon that possessed him. Throughout February the story builds.  I’m not going to give all of the details here – just a sketch. More of the story will be told on Sunday mornings, as well as the opportunity to reflect upon it’s implications for our own lives. By the way, all of the Gospel passages for February come from Mark’s Gospel, which is the first account of Jesus’ story to be written.

February 5th (Mark 1:29-39) Jesus heals many at Simon’s house … the sick and demon possessed are made whole .. Jesus retreats to a deserted place to connect with God to make sure his GPS is working and he’s heading in the right direction … he goes throughout Galilee proclaiming the message and casting out demons.

February 12th (Mark 1:40-45)  A leper asks Jesus to cleanse him of his disease – Jesus “chooses” to honor his request.  Jesus requests of the one healed not to divulge the information that Jesus was the healing one – keep his identity a secret (which is one of Mark’s themes).  Fat chance of that happening! The one healed tells  everyone everything – and people from everywhere come seeking Jesus.

Volume 1

February 19th (Mark 9:2-9 – The Transfiguration of the Lord) After teaching and healing, being rejected by his hometown folks, feeding the 5,000, walking on water, Peter declaring Jesus to be the Messiah, and Jesus foretelling of his death --- Jesus takes his inner-circle disciples mountain-top where he is transfigured before them. Again the charge – tell no one. What happened on the mountain……

February 22nd – Ash Wednesday , the beginning of Lent.  We gather with our sister Fab 4 church members at Faith Presbyterian Church at 6:30 p.m.  to remember our identity as the people of God and followers of Christ.  We will be charged to remember our own baptism and challenged to keep it holy.

February 26th, the First Sunday in Lent (Mark 1:9-15) We remember through this gospel passage Jesus’ baptism, his wilderness wrestling with the way to shape his ministry  – and his call to us to repent and realign our lives with our own baptismal identity.

I hope these samplings of the topics we will be considering during the Sundays of February (and on Ash Wednesday) have given you some food for reflection and caused you to hunger for more. Join us Sundays for the full story, and to find not only spiritual nourishment but growth possibilities as well, as we consider the implications of Jesus’ story for the story of our own lives.

See you, Church…  in church,

Rev. Roger

Living Waters for the World

This year’s mission offering at the Milwaukee Presbytery’s Discovery Day on February 25th will benefit Living Waters for the World.  Our congregation will be participating by taking a special offering during the month of February.  The Presbytery is hoping to raise $3500 which is the amount needed for one water purification system for a needy community. Living Waters for the World trains, equips, links and supports mission teams to share the gift of clean water with communities in need.  Their teams have installed systems at more than 270 sites in 19 countries.  The organization trains members of the community so they can be self sufficient.   For more information on this cause please visit www.livingwatersfortheworld.org and watch for more information in church soon.

Angel Tree Christmas 2012

Thanks for the great participation in the Angel Tree program.  There were 11 families with a total of 31 children we covered this year.  Whether you shopped, wrapped presents, delivered presents, helped with delivery pick up, or prayed for the program we appreciate your part in making Angel Tree 2011 a success.  The following are parts from two prisoners’ thank you notes:

Prisoner #1

It means a lot to me that you and the Angel Tree program can do this for my son and many others like him.  I am quite sure he’ll love the gifts.  Especially the Green Bay hooded pullover sweatshirt.  Again, thank you so much for all that you have done.

Prisoner #2

I am writing to let you know how much my children and I are thankful for what you did for them this Christmas.  It has been and continues to be a rough year for them as their mother has been dealing with cancer for the second time now in her lung and their grandma has cancer and a short time to live.  So there was great joy when they got your gifts because it put such a smile on their faces and let them know that there are people who care about others who don’t even know them.  To me you all are a blessing from God.  I thank you greatly for all you do and God bless you all who were involved in my children’s gifts!

Gift of Flowers

A wonderful addition to the church service is the gift of flowers. They add a beautiful touch and put some of God's colorful creation in our midst as we worship Him.

               To donate flowers:

-Sign up on the flower calendar for a date that is special to you - birthday, anniversary, memorial, or just because! If there is already a name by the date you want, please contact that person to see if sharing the bouquets would be ok.

-Please find the envelope marked for that Sunday (in the baggie next to the flower chart on the bulletin board) and return payment to the office at least a week prior to your dedicated Sunday. The payment is $30.

-There is a standing order with a florist who does the arrangements, so no action is needed on your part, UNLESS you have a special request. If that is the case you can speak with Pam, our Church secretary.

-On the Sunday that you donate the flowers, the Deacon covering that service will ask you if you'd like the bouquet(s) (one, both, or neither) or if you have anyone special to whom you'd like them given, if you don't take them.  If you don't have a preference, the Deacon will distribute them to someone from the Church - a homebound member, someone listed in the day's Joys& Concerns, or a hospitalized member.  In that way you have not only added to the beauty of the church service, but you have also given a bright spot of beauty to someone else who receives the flowers (blessed by the day's service!).

We hope you will consider this small but very meaningful gift, for the service and for others in our Church family. Please speak with a Deacon if you have any questions.

The Choir’s annual Pancake Supper will be held on Sunday, February 19th from 5-7 pm.  Two kinds of pancakes, sausage, applesauce and dessert will be served.
