July/August 2011

 From the Pastor

In the past several months, members and friends of Forest Park Church have responded in several ways to help meet needs of people who are outside of our own church community. Together we are making a world of difference.  Sometimes we invite you to participate in special offerings for special needs but once the offering is received, we fail to communicate the results of the offering with you.  In this article I will provide the results of some of our recent appeals for mission support through special offerings.

Throughout the month of April members and friends of Forest Park contributed $261.50 to the New Wilmington Mission Conference service project   – ‘Stop Hunger Now.’  Your financial contributions funded 1,046 meals!  That’s a lot of meals. You gave of your change, so the lives of others may change.

The ‘One Great Hour of Sharing’ offering received on Easter Day, April 24th   was $466.00. Contributions came in the following ways: $90 from donations for the Easter Breakfast, a matching amount of $90 from the SCRIP FUND, and $286 from individual offerings received as part of our Easter worship.  What happens to the offerings? Each of three programs – Self Development of People (SDOP), Presbyterian Disaster Assistance (PDA), and the Presbyterian Hunger Program (PHP) – receives 32% of the offering; the remaining 4% goes to the PHP for its work on homelessness and affordable housing. The PC(USA) offering has received $8 million to $11 million for at least the past twenty years.

The amount received on June 12th for the Pentecost Offering was $256  Our congregation will retain 40% of the offering ($102.40) for programs we identify that benefit children at risk. The General Assembly divides the remaining 60% between ministries with youth and

young adults (50%) and children-at-risk ministries (10%).

Volume 6

The proceeds from our ‘Repurpose 2 Renew 2 Inspire ‘event on June 18th   (the amount is unknown at the time this article is being written) will support our outreach ministry to children and families through Play & Learn.  We have expanded that ministry by adding a child care component to the already existing preschool program. We are now able to offer families in our community an all day (6:30 am – 6 pm) high quality program for their children 2 ½  - 6 years old. You are the best source of advertisings we have for Play and Learn. I hope you will spread the word about Play and Learns’ excellent reputation and what it has to offer children.  Promote Play and Learn to your extended family members, friends, neighbors and the people you find yourselves conversing with during the day. We are proud of Play and Learn and know it can have a profound positive influence upon children who attend.

We look forward to Sunday, July 3rd when we again have the opportunity to help meet needs of people in Waukesha County through the “Loaves and Fishes” outreach ministry. When it is our turn to host ‘Loaves and Fishes,’ we purchase  food for the meal, prepare the food at our church, and then serve the meal at the Hope Center in Waukesha. Since our Sunday to host  is on a holiday weekend we may be in need of volunteers. Please check your calendars to see if you are available, and watch for more information from the mission committee regarding signing up.

It is gratifying to know that through the sharing of our resources we are providing opportunities to people to experience changes in their life situations.  Thank you for the many ways you support mission through Forest Park Church.

Throughout the summer I look forward to times of sharing with you – in fellowship, worship, and mission.

Rev. Roger

It has been exactly three years ago that in this column I introduced the plan for the Presbyterian Church USA to publish a new hymnal.  So time flies, and while it seems impossible that three years have passed, the committee is now at a point where a sampler will be available for use in worship at Big Tent 2011 in Indianapolis being held June 30 – July 2.  David Eicher, Hymnal Editor, reports that all but one hymn in this sampler did not appear in the current Presbyterian Hymnal.  A complete list of hymns will be presented to the 2012 General Assembly meeting in Pittsburgh. Also, a more complete sampler will be prepared for that event.  To reiterate again the goals of the new hymnal, this is what Eicher has to say:  “A new collection of congregational song will give us an opportunity to make available a great wealth of hymns and spiritual songs that have arisen since the 1990 hymnal, to acquaint worshipers with wonderful resources from Christian communities around the world, and to review again the great heritage of congregational songs that have been passed on to us from past generations of faithful worshipers.”  The new Presbyterian hymnal is scheduled for release in the fall of 2013.  From my experience, having at one time introduced a new hymnal,  I would say that this is an experience to look forward to, because the introduction of a new hymnal cannot help but reinvigorate congregational worship and offer new insights into congregation singing.

New Wilmington Mission Conference

We pass along to the members of our congregation the “thank you” we received from the mission committee of NWMC.

Dear Friends at Forest Park,

Thank you for your recent donation of $264.75 for the service project of this year’s New Wilmington Mission Conference.  Your faithfulness to the Conference is appreciated as we seek to fulfill our Lord’s Great commission and motivate God’s people to a life of fellowship with Him and service to Jesus Christ.

As the New Wilmington Mission Conference looks to its 106th year, we celebrate the worldwide mission of our Lord:  “…that my name might be proclaimed in all the earth.”

I thank God for your generous gift and pray that God’s grace through Jesus Christ will come to you in abundance.  May 2011 be a year of ministry and service that is blessed by God for you!

HELP WANTED!

 Stewardship Committee

The Stewardship Committee is gearing up for the Fall, 2011 Stewardship Program.  The format of the program will be similar to the past 2 years.  Members are needed to help facilitate the different parts of the program.  We are looking for anyone who can help with mailings, communications, luncheon planning, and speakers who would be willing to share their thoughts and experiences about spiritual and financial stewardship.  You do not need to be able to do all of these tasks; committee members specialize in one of the listed areas.  The committee will begin meeting in Aug. This is a short-term commitment through mid-November.  If you can give of your time and talents for this project, please contact Linda Koszuta – 262-442-6572 as soon as possible.

ANGEL TREE BACKPACKS

Have you had a chance to stop by the Angle Tree table? Hurry before the tags are gone!

We have a much bigger project this year.  Last year we had around 12 backpacks.  Now we have 27 backpacks to fill.  We are pleased to say over half the back tags have been taken.

Anyone that can help with putting the backpacks together July 31st or help with delivering the backpacks, let Jodi Godsell 262-895-7609 or Karen Zobel 262-786-4225 know.  Thanks again for your help

Karen Zobel & Jodi Godsell

The Deacons are looking for people to knit and/or crochet prayer shawls. The projects are small, and a pattern can be provided. Interested in helping, but don't know how? Contact a Deacon, or Sara Grant and you'll be connected with someone who will be happy to teach you!

              Parish Life News:

A HUGE “thank you” to all who assisted with our Repurpose 2 Renew 2 Inspire Event!  Whether you donated rummage or bakery items, prepared or served food or gave of your time to assist in pulling this all together this event would not be possible without your help.    A special thank you to Rick Pomeroy for providing his musical talent and the Godsell family for managing the fantastic eats!  We are fortunate for our success on so many different levels. Mostly with our vendors: many commented how impressed they were with our hospitality and the kindness shown to them in our beautiful “park like” setting which was enjoyed by all. The attendance might have been down compared to last June (it is hard to judge being outside), however many new connections and ideas were made along with a great interest to return for our “Craft and Gift Affaire” on October 8th.  We will announce our financial results as soon as our final totals are in – so stay tuned.

Looking ahead please mark your calendars for the annual CHURCH PICNIC on RALLY SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 11th immediately following the church service.  This year the picnic will be held at church in our “park like” setting.  Watch the Parish Life Board for details, the sign up sheet and activities.  Consider inviting your extended family and friends, as this is a great way for all of us to continue to learn more about each other and have a great time too!
