Keeping in Touch
The liturgical season of Lent begins this month. If you ask people what they associate with Lent, many of them might think of giving things up. However, as Meda Stamper wrote, “the Lenten texts suggest that what we are called to give up are distractions that may make it harder for us to set out properly on the journey with Jesus, harder to see the treasures on the way and to feel the wind of the Spirit blowing over us and driving us toward the One who loves us and wants us to come home.” The Lenten texts all take us to
Jesus as he approaches
I provide here the First Lesson texts and the Gospel readings for the Sundays of Lent. Reading them and reflecting upon them may be for you a meaningful Lenten devotional as well as advanced preparation for our consideration of them during worship. The first Sunday in Lent: Genesis 2:15-17; 3:1-7 and Matthew 4:1-11; Second Sunday in Lent: Genesis 12:1-4a and John 3:1-17; Third Sunday in Lent: Exodus 17:1-7 and John 4:5-42; Fourth Sunday in Lent: 1 Samuel 16:1-13 and John 9: 1-41; Fifth Sunday in Lent: Ezekiel 37: 1-14 and John 11: 1-45; Palm/Passion Sunday: Psalm 118:1-2,19-29 and Matthew 21:1-11.
May our Lenten journey this year draw us closer to God, to our true selves, and to others in ways that create and strengthen community.
I take this opportunity to thank the following
Volume 2
the ‘What’s Next Committee’, Sally Daugherty is serving on the Permanent Judicial Commission and is a liaison to First Presbyterian Church of Waukesha for C.O.M. Elders are asked a number of constitutional questions when they are Ordained and every time they are installed to serve on the session. One question is “…will you share in government and discipline, serving in governing bodies of the church” (Book of Order G-14.0207 i). We are grateful for these elders who are now serving the presbytery and for those who have served in previous years. Thank you for strengthening the connectional nature of our church and denomination.
On the journey with you,
Rev. Roger
The Deacon on Call for March is Bill Bennewitz 262-784-0984.

With Easter occurring late April,
about as late as possible, Ash Wednesday and the beginning of Lent is also
delayed. Ash Wednesday, usually sometime
in February, comes this year in early March.
The first Sunday in Lent is March 13.
The Gospel reading for this Sunday is always Jesus’ temptation in the
wilderness. This year the reading is
from Matthew 4:1-11. The choir will
expand on this theme by singing Hal H. Hopson’s arrangement of the American
spiritual, ‘Jesus Walked This Lonesome Valley.”
“Jesus walked this lonesome valley, he had to walk it by himself; Oh,
nobody else, could walk it for him, he had to walk it by himself.” The Psalm appointed for March 20, the second
Sunday of Lent, is Psalm 121. The choir
will again turn to music by Hal H. Hopson, this time for his setting of Psalm
121: “I lift my eyes to the mountains
soaring above, I ask for help, help that only comes from the Lord, the Lord of
life, the God of gods, the maker of all heav’n and all the earth. Finally, on March 27, we have as the Gospel
reading John 4:5-14. It is the account
of the Woman at the Well, and Jesus’ wonderful promise to her: “those who drink of the water that I will give
them will never be thirsty. The water
that I will give will become in them a spring of water gushing up to eternal
life.” The choir will sing “In the
Valley Flows a River” by Nolan.
In the valley flows a river, gentle waters from the Lord, and those who
stop and drink there will never thirst for more.
In the valley flows a river, cooling stream that has no end, in its
grace we find forgiveness, cleansing fountain for our sins.
From the mountain springs it cometh to the deserts to the plains,
bringing life to all it touches, bringing peace where there is pain.
In the valley there is comfort where the peaceful waters flow, and all
who pause and pray there will find rest for their souls.
In the valley flows a river fed by heaven’s gentle rain, and all who
stop and drink there will never thirst again.

One of my favorite parts of Angel Tree is
after Christmas when we sometimes receive thank you notes from the
prisoners. This year we received three. One before Christmas, as the prisoner was
being moved to another prison. He was
very appreciative of the gifts provided to his children in the last few years.
Another said thank you three times in his
letter for his daughter’s gifts. We
always give the caregiver a gift and he was appreciative for his mom’s gift.
Here is part of another prisoner’s
Letter. “I am writing to thank you all
for the beautiful gifts that you sent to my two children. In talking to my daughter, she told me that
there sure are some really caring people in this world to have given her these
nice things and that she is thankful for them and those who sent them to
her. She loves the sweet pea body lotion
and tried to tell me what the smell smells like. My son said he needed a new sweatshirt and
someone knows he is into skateboards to have given him a skateboard key chain;
he thanks you all for his gifts also. I
would like to thank you for the gifts you have given my children and may the
Lord bless you for it.” He was also
extremely grateful for his Christmas card and letter stating what gifts his
children received.
Thanks again for your help with Angel Tree
2010. There are some very grateful
prisoners.

There is a
new chair in our future! After months of looking, chairs have been found to
meet our needs. They are stack able, saving much needed space in the lower
level. They are molded polypropylene making them easy to keep clean and quiet
because they have no moving parts. Alfax, the company we are purchasing the
chairs from, says they are rated at 300 pounds. [We did our own testing by
having Reverend Roger sit on Don Larsen’s lap and the chair passed the test.]
The chairs will be manufactured in Green Bay so shipping will only be charged
from there. And best of all, those who sat in the “test chair” have found it
comfortable.
It has been
decided to purchase 150 new chairs to replace the old folding ones in
Fellowship Hall and the blue ones in the Hospitality Room. This will put a strain on the Building and
Grounds budget, as each chair is about $50. So we are asking members and
friends to consider buying a chair or a part of one. If you would like to
contribute, it would be helpful to have your donation in by the 20th
of March. Then, if all goes as planned, we could be sitting on them by Easter.
