Keeping in Touch

Presbyterians Today, the magazine of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), is a valuable resource for keeping us connected with the ministries we are committed to as a  denomination, and for finding out what other congregations are doing in the areas of social justice, stewardship, evangelism, Christian education, ecumenism, mission and etc. As well, the magazine provides information about our Presbyterian heritage and about the new things we are doing today as we live out our faith.

A special issue of Presbyterians Today has been published that is a simple guidebook that has pulled together in one place a lot of the basics of our church, including its teachings and traditions.  It is, as they call it – “Presbyterianism 101.”   It provides information about how the church is organized and governed, what it means to be a reformed and connectional church… and much more.   Those who have been Presbyterians all of their lives and those who are new to the Presbyterian denomination will find this special issue of Presbyterians Today “Welcome to the Presbyterian Church!” – informative and inspirational.  The magazine’s publisher, Jeffrey Lawrence and its editor, Eva Stimson, imagined it would “provide a solid introduction to the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) and be a springboard to further study and deeper faith. ” This issue is a great resource for welcome kits, confirmation and new-member classes, elder/deacon/officer training, evangelism, adult study – or just a terrific refresher for lifelong Presbyterians.

We have a copy of this special issue of Presbyterians Today for every family of Forest Park Church. We believe you’ll not only enjoy reading this special issue but that you’ll consider it a “keeper.”  If someone asks you what it means to be a Presbyterian – this is a great tool to help

you answer that question. You may even want to loan them your copy.

We have a copy of this special issue for you. We hope you will pick yours up at church beginning mid-May.

Enjoy the beauty of this season, the beauty of others, and the beauty of yourself as one of God’s wonderful creations.

As the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) prepares a new hymnal, it is interesting to look at hymnals of the past.  Robert T. Coote, an editor of the International Bulletin of Missionary Research, has studied Episcopal, Baptist, Congregational, Lutheran, Methodist, and Presbyterian hymnals from the late 1800’s to the present, and out of the almost 5000 hymns published, he came up with thirteen hymns that have appeared in all these hymnals up to the present.  Here they are:  Abide with me, fast falls the eventide; All hail the power of Jesus’ name; Come, ye thankful people, come; Crown him with many crowns; Glorious things of thee are spoken; Guide me, O though great Jehovah; Holy, holy, Holy! Lord God almighty; How firm a foundation, ye saints; In the cross of Christ I glory; Jesus shall reign where’re the sun; Love divine, all loves excelling; O sacred Head, now wounded; and When I survey the wondrous cross.

Christmas carols and service music were not included in the survey. Of the five or six hundred hymns in a typical hymnal, half are old and half are new.   Over this span of time, Coyote was able to observe the use of mediocre hymns for a time, but only the truly great withstood the test of time beyond a few generations.  Average date of the top 13:  1788!  So much for the new!   If you are interested in how some hymns that are not in the top 13 faired, check out “Everybody’s Favorites—Hymns That Last” posted on the music bulletin board in the sacristy.

CAN YOU HEAR ME NOW?

Yes, now everyone can!  The Deacons have purchased a system to aid those who have hearing impairment.  Devices to enable you to use the system may be found on the table in the back of the sanctuary, along with large print bulletins, hymnals and bibles.  If you have a need to use the system, please ask the head usher for help.  They are Ron Reuteler, Mike Marr and Gary Stigler.

I Dream of Peace Concert

Jessica Prom had the opportunity to be a guest singer with The Vocal Arts Academy of Milwaukee for the "I Dream of Peace" concert at Christ King Parish in Wauwatosa on April 10th. The Bell Canto Boys Choir also participated. The concert songs expressed the voice, thoughts and experiences of children during war...... including both fear and hope for the future. It was a very moving performance using song, psalms, and music. Great job Jessica!

CORRESPONDENCE

Dear Forest Park friends,

I wish to thank all those who sent cards and notes to me in regard to wishing me well on the Stars and Stripes Honor Flight to Washington, D.C. on April 16.  Not only did my church friends relay messages to me, but I also heard from the Sunday School children as well.  I appreciate these messages which will be kept with all the other mementos of the day's trip.

The Stars and Stripes Honor Flight is held several times a year and is offered to veterans of World War II.  Each participant is given a guardian, a volunteer from the public, who is responsible for taking care of that person throughout the day.  I was fortunate in having my daughter, Carol Hidle, as my guardian.  She enjoyed our usual mother-daughter relationship being temporarily reversed for those hours of the trip.

There were two complete plane loads of veterans with their guardians.  As far as I know, there were only four women veterans on the flight.  The rest were men who had served in World War II.  Many tales of their war experiences were swapped and relived throughout the day.  I had served in the Navy Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland, just outside of Washington, as Pharmacist's Mate, 2nd Class.

At 10:30 am. we were welcomed in Washington by two long lines of persons who thanked us for our service during the war.  Even though it was raining throughout the day, the bright green grass, the fully leafed trees and the cherry blossoms and flowers were beautiful.

Our itinerary consisted of visiting the war memorials--Iwo Jima, Vietnam and World War II--.  Also we viewed the changing of the guard ceremony at the tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington Cemetery.

Because of weather conditions our plane was almost 3 hours late in arriving at Mitchell Field at 11:00 that evening.  We were amazed at the huge crowds who waited at the airport that long to greet us and to thank us for our service during the war.

So, once again, I thank you for showing an interest in my flight and experiences on that day, the memory of which I will treasure the rest of my life.

 Sincerely,

 Thelma Reimer

CHAIRS

Our new chars are here.  They arrived on Wednesday, April 13th.  They and their caddies came in 42 boxes.  Some of the boxes will be useful for our kids in Sunday School, Plan & Learn, Extended Care and Vacation Bible School.  Our funding campaign, so far, has raised enough money for 127 chairs.  We are still accepting donations for 23 chairs and the caddies. Our thanks to Sally Daugherty for her leadership and hard work in selecting the right chair and for shepherding this project.  We also thank Mike Wise and our Pastor for the much needed help on very short notice to unload the chairs from the truck.  We thank all of you who contributed to this project.

Repurpose 2 Renew 2 Inspire

Saturday, June 18, 2011

9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

WE NEED RENTERS/VENDORS – Please pass the word!  Information and applications are available on our website at www.forestparkpcusa.org  We will start advertising our sale with the number of renters/vendors by May 18th.  As of this printing we have confirmed 8 vendors and 2 community booths.  We can accept over 35 vendors. Remember vendors can sell: rummage, collections, crafts, services, plants - anything – that within a family theme.

Please bring your donations for the church rummage and craft sale to the stage starting Memorial Day weekend.  While we will accept items up until noon on Friday, June 17th we would greatly appreciate it if you could bring the majority of your items to the church by Sunday, June 12th. To assist us with pricing Donn from DJ’s Antiques has graciously volunteered to appraise any antique/collectible items we obtain.  He will not buy any of these items and if they do not sell we will be able to put them in his shop under consignment for Forest Park.

With the exception of NO CLOTHES or TV’s we will take just about anything!  If you have any questions about what to donate or if you need help getting items to church please give Sam or I a call.

HELP, HELP, HELP, HELP NEEDED:

If you are willing to participate in the bake sale, please give Karen Zoebel a call at 262-786-4225.  Our bakery sales really add to our success! Karen will be out of town the sale weekend so we are looking for some volunteer’s to price and organize these items the day of the sale!  Bake sale profits will go with the Forest Park group to the New Wilmington Conference to support their meal program effort.

Help for pricing/organizing rummage/crafts as well as extra hands throughout the day of sale.  Note: we will not turn down ANY amount of time you can share with us!

We would like to have games/activities available for children and could really use leadership and assistance in this area to be able to provide this option.

Or simply stop in and join us the day of the sale, shop, enjoy lunch by our Youth Group (profits help support their New Wilmington Mission Trip expenses) and enjoy the music of Rick Pomeroy.

Thanks in advance for your participation, support, and well wishes for a successful day!
