at Play & Learn Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday 4th Monday – Health Department Immunization Clinic |
October 2011
Beginning with the third Sunday of September, we are having a continuous reading from Paul’s epistle to the Philippians. Each Sunday has a chosen portion from each chapter—Chapter 1 on September 18; Chapter 2 on September 25; Chapter 3 on the first Sunday of this month, October 2; and then, finally, Chapter 4 on September 9. By now you have probably guessed that Philippians has four chapters! However, it is to this last chapter, chapter 4, on October 9, that the choir will be singing from that appointed reading. We are surely familiar with this text; perhaps it is even a favorite: “Rejoice in the Lord always: and again I will say, Rejoice. Let your gentleness be known to everyone. The Lord is near. Do not worry about anything; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which passeth all that surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus (Phil. 4:4-7).” The anthem based on this text that the choir will be singing is new to us: “Rejoice in the Lord” by John Behnke. We are looking forward to presenting this anthem to the congregation this month.

If you know or hear of a prayer need and would like to have
one started on the prayer chain, notify the Deacon on Call for the month to
initiate your request. If you cannot
reach that Deacon, call the Church Office and speak to Pam, or leave a message
on the answering machine to be retrieved by her or Roger.

Consecration Sunday is
Coming
Congregations that approach financial
stewardship from a biblical perspective do not view the money Christians give
to their church merely as a way to pay its bills. Rather, such congregations see financial
contributions as a way to help people grow spiritually in their relationship
with God by supporting their church's mission and ministry with a percentage of
their incomes.
Our congregation's stewardship committee
has selected the New Consecration Sunday Stewardship Program as a way to
teach the biblical and spiritual principals of generous giving in our
stewardship education emphasis this year.
New Consecration Sunday is based on
the biblical philosophy of the giver to give for his or her own spiritual
development, rather than on the need of the church to receive. Instead of treating people like followers of
a social club who should pay dues, we will treat people like followers of Jesus
Christ who want to give unselfishly as an act of discipleship. New
Consecration Sunday encourages people toward proportionate and systematic
giving in response to the question,
“What percentage of my income is God calling me to give?” During morning worship on Consecration
Sunday, we are asking our attendees and members to make their financial
commitments to our church's missionary, benevolent, and educational ministries
in the community and around the world.
Every attendee and member who completes an
Estimate of Giving Card does so voluntarily by attending morning worship
on Consecration Sunday. We urge people
to attend who feel strongly opposed to completing a card. The procedure is done in such a way that no
one feels personal embarrassment if he or she chooses not to fill out a card.
We will do no home solicitation to ask
people to complete
cards. During morning worship, our
leader will conduct a brief period of instruction and inspiration, climaxed by
members making their commitments as a confidential act of worship.
We will encourage participation in
Consecration Sunday events through the Consecration Sunday team and governing
board members. Since we will make no
follow-up visits to ask people to complete their cards, we will make every
effort to inform, inspire, and commit everyone to attend Consecration Sunday
worship.
Thanks in advance for your enthusiastic
participation in the Consecration Sunday events.
Linda Koszuta and Peg Woehl, Stewardship
Committee
The church is required to pay an annual amount to the Presbytery. This amount is called “Per-Capita” and is decided and voted upon by the presbytery at one of its fall meetings. This year the Church’s per-capita amount is $4,865. That amount is based off of the number of confirmed members on the membership rolls at the end of last year times $27.80, this year’s amount per member. There is not a special place that money comes from – simply the first $4,865 of the year goes towards that payment. If you have not yet contributed to your per-capita yet this year, it isn’t too late. Every amount we receive for this is a little less burden on our operating budget.
The Play and Learn Preschool and Extended Care enrolment is
on-going. If you would like to find out more information or have a tour, please
call us at 262-786-5818. Or visit the
web site at www.playnlearnpreschool.org. Also, if you know of someone who may be
interested, please pass this information to them.
We also have our new extended care/child care opened to
all. If you haven’t already taken a
“peek” downstairs to see how we have transformed Fellowship Hall into a warm,
clean and inviting center for our children, please do so. Denise Platzer is our child care teacher and
is a warm, caring person with many wonderful, creative activities for your
children. If it’s for a daily schedule
or just for scheduled drop-offs, we can be there for you!! Please call 262-786-5818 for more
information.
Our theme next month is a double one: AUTUMN/HALLOWEEN. In the classroom we will focus on apples,
leaves, the harvest, pumpkins and all the changes that occur during this
beautiful season. We will also talk
about Halloween, the sights and sounds of this holiday and we will have a
Halloween celebration with a costume parade!!
October is a very busy month at Play & Learn Preschool.
We will also be having our first fund raiser, Butter
Braids. Colleen Raup did a short
presentation after the church service on Sunday, Sept 18 along with having
samples. Order forms will be
available. The selling date is from
Sept. 16th – October 6th. The delivery date will be October 18th
at 11:30AM. There is a display set up in
Room 1 with all the flavour choices of these delicious pastries!! They can be kept frozen until ready to bake. Great for the holidays and overnight
company!!

Forest Park Hayride:

For corporations and organizations that use a January to December style budget, as we do, September marks the end of the 3rd quarter and start of the final budget quarter. The end of the 3rd quarter sets the table for marketing and expense strategies, as well as giving the management a feel for how the year has been and is going to be. Our Session is looking at these numbers, as most corporations are, and hoping we can improve our outlook over the next quarter and finish the year strong.
Traditionally we fall behind our pledging over the summer. Between vacations, trips “up north” (or wherever our get-a-way place is), family activities, or just time away from our church family for whatever reason – pledging drops off during the summer. We started September $18,000 behind in pledged amounts for the year. The Session anticipated a minor deficit at the start of the year and with the added costs of the HVAC system repairs and other repair projects that projection went up a little. If our pledging remains behind, we will have even greater deficit problems at the end of the year. If you are behind in your pledged amount, and are able to catch up – please do. If you saw a change in income and can no longer meet that pledge that is understandable.
Additionally, if you have given in the past for the New Look mortgage re-payment fund, we still have a mortgage and make monthly payments on that. We continue to make progress in paying that amount down and with past additional payments we are paying much more on the principle than we pay in interest, but we cannot forget about that fund as well. If you have not given in the past but would like to, please contact the church office for an envelope or submit any amount to the church with a note indicating New Look.
The church does not generate much income. There are smaller amounts received from building use, rent from the manse property and some smaller investments that generate some income, but in general; we are the church, and we are the revenue stream for our church. Let’s pray for a strong final quarter in 2011 and that we continue our work as a place of faith and hope in our community.
Perennials needed
Please donate your excess perennials from your garden for beautification of Forest Park.
You can deliver plants to church October 13th & October 14th, as they will be planted rain or shine on October 15th.
Please call Sue Mihelich 262-784-0437 or Sue Hoover 414-510-2871 with information about your perennials so they can be planted successfully!
We are happy to welcome Mindy Masset into membership at Forest Park Church. Mindy has been a part of Forest Park her whole life, and just recently became a member. Mindy graduated from WA Central High School in 2003, and from the University of Minnesota in Winona in December, 2009 with a degree in music education. She enjoys quilting and playing her cello. She has shared her beautiful music in Church on several occasions already. Please take the opportunity to visit with Mindy and welcome her into our Church family. Don't forget to ask her about her great-grandma and grandpa, grandma and grandpa and aunts and uncles who all were/are a part of the life of Forest Park Church.
