Keeping in Touch

Forest Park Church has had a wonderful summer. We ordained and installed elders and deacons --- hosted an awesome ‘Repurpose 2 Renew 2 Inspire’ event with many vendors participating and our own Rick Pomeroy providing hours of fantastic music --- provided a meal to hungry people in Waukesha County through the outreach program ‘Loaves & Fishes’--- were inspired by the music of the special men’s and women’s choirs --- participated with ten youth & young adults and four adults in the New Wilmington Mission Conference --- and hosted a terrific Vacation Bible School for between 40-50 children with helpers from Forest Park, Heritage, and Greenfield Avenue Churches. These special events were surrounded by many other meaningful worship experiences and happenings at Forest Park.

Now that September is here we look forward to spending more time with the members and friends of our faith community. I highlight here some things that are happening during September that I’m sure you won’t want to miss.

            -  During worship on Sunday, September 4th we will celebrate Holy Communion.

            -  September 11th is Rally Day Sunday.  On Rally Day we kick off our Christian education program through the Sunday School, the Adult Choir resumes again to offer inspirational music. Roger Meyer will offer a special musical Reflection on the past 9/11 tragedy faced by our nation.

- Then it’s picnic time! Time for “picnic-type” clothing, spreading out our food upon the tables, enjoying one another as we relax, chat and, for those who wish to do so, play games.  We hope everyone will come to our annual church picnic. This year the picnic will be at Forest Park.   Bring your friends, it is a great opportunity for them to get to know

some of the folks at Forest Park and for us to get to know them.

- September is also the time when school begins. Our Play & Learn school, offering preschool and childcare, begins on Wednesday, September 7th.  Play & Learn offers an exceptional educational experience for children 21/2  - 6 years old, from 6:30 am – 6 pm.   Be sure to tell your neighbors, friends, family members, and co-workers about Play and Learn.

I’m looking forward to the time we will spend together during September and the months ahead.

This month marks the tenth anniversary of 9/11.  Actually, the date falls on the second Sunday of the month, our Rally Sunday.  To commemorate this anniversary, I have decided to present a brief piano recital highlighting two works by Rudy Davenport.  It will consist of two compositions:  “September 11” and “America the Beautiful.”  Davenport says that “September 11” is his expression of the devastation and depression that he felt on that day; yet, with that composition, he felt that further resolution was needed.  Hence, the “America the Beautiful.”  The two pieces are meant to be played together.  Davenport says that in these pieces he has not attempted any kind of political statement, but rather they are his “prayer for the victims of that day and for the healing of my country.”  A little more biographical information on Davenport might be of interest.  Although he was born in Haynesville, NC and now resides as a freelance composer, pianist and church musician in Austin, TX, he actually has a few Milwaukee connections.  He attended Cardinal Stritch University and has a Master of Divinity degree from Sacred Heart School of Theology.  He also studied composition with the late John Downey, Composer-in-Residence at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.  It is my hope that this program will prove meaningful to all those who attend.

 Dear Forest Park family,

Thank you so much for the prayers, cards, and phone calls I received in regards to my surgery on Aug. 8th. (And the additional surgery later that same night!!) I'd like to thank you for the beautiful prayer shawl.  I truly appreciate your good wishes and concerns.  Faith and hope will help one heal. We have an awesome church.

 Thank you again,

 Betty Marr

The Play and Learn Preschool and Extended Care enrolment is on-going. If you would like to find out more information or have a tour, please call us at 262-786-5818.  Or visit the web site at www.playnlearnpreschool.org.  Also, if you know of someone who may be interested, please pass this information to them.

Our school year begins Wednesday, Sept. 7th.   Our first theme for this year is SCHOOL.  We will be focusing on the classroom routine procedures, equipment and material.  We will also work on becoming familiar with each other’s names and our cubby numbers.   And, we always enjoy starting to learn and recognize our colors and shapes in all things around us!!

We also have our new extended care/child care opened to all.  If you haven’t already taken a peek downstairs to see how we have transformed Fellowship Hall into a warm, clean and inviting center for our children, please do so.  Denise Platzer is our child care teacher and is a warm, caring person with many wonderful, creative activities for your children.    If it’s for a daily schedule or just for scheduled drop-offs, we can be there for you!!     Please call 262-786-5818 for more information.

Beach Party VBS Wrap-up

We had a great week of “Surfin' Through the Scriptures" at vacation bible

school during the week of August 8-12.  There were 48 students that attended

each day and learned about the "Be-Attitudes" of Be Obedient, Be Kind, Be

Forgiving, Be Bold and Believe.  Students also learned to be caring members of the community by donating school supplies for children in need.  Many thanks to everyone who donated items and time for our week.  We couldn't have done it without you!

CHANGE TO CHANGE WORLD HUNGER

Have you been wondering what happened to all of those quarters that we collected in May for the New Wilmington Mission Conference?  They were collected for the mission project for the week at the conference.  An organization called "Stop Hunger Now" was at the conference and organized the project.  350 people volunteered their time during the week to package 28,080 meals. Each bag consisted of soy, a vitamin packet, dried vegetables and rice.  Each meal feeds a family of six.  That means that Forest Park helped fund the feeding of 168,480 people in Kenya.  Thank you to everyone that gave change to help support this worthy cause.  Kenya has been suffering from a drought and the food was badly needed.  If we work together we can change the world.

Also, if you have a new e-mail address or would like to verify you current information please contact Pam in the office. If you have a prayer chain request or special need please contact the Deacon on call, your Care Group Deacon, or the church office. If you are not sure who your Deacon is please see the bulletin board in the hospitality room or contact the church office. Thank you for your help in meeting the needs of our church.

PENNIES

For

HABITAT FOR HUMANITY

Many years ago Clarence Reimer designed a “Habitat for Humanity Bank” for us.  It is in the shape of a house and it is on one of the tables at the back of the sanctuary, near the area where the ushers sit. He made it so that every two inches of the house would hold $20.00 worth of pennies.  The part that holds the pennies is ten inches tall so that when it is filled with pennies it holds $100.  In the past there have been times when the bank was full and the money was sent to Habitat for Humanity.

Habitat for Humanity does such a wonderful job of providing homes throughout the world. Wouldn’t this be a good time to get our pennies together and send $100 off to them again?

Rally Day, September 11, 2011 will be the first day for Forest Park Sunday School classes this fall. We will continue to have the children attend worship with their parents.  During worship, the children will be excused to attend their Sunday School classes for 45 minutes. After their class is completed, the students will meet their families in the hospitality room.
Nursery will be provided. There will be classes for students in elementary grades and students in middle school(grades six and seven). Students in eighth and ninth grades and their parents will receive
a mailing in September with information regarding Confirmation classes.
Anyone interested in teaching or helping with Sunday School should contact Carol Krogmann at: 262-782-0383 or ckrogmann@wi.rr.com

The Helpful Hannahs are continuing to collect personal care products, to distribute to those in need.  Bring in those travel soaps, lotions and creams that have been accumulating on your counters or dresser tops – toothbrushes and tooth paste, nail care items, combs and brushes, deodorant, shampoo,  etc.  (PLEASE, no medicines of any kind!).  Past donations have been packaged in gift bags and backpacks and distributed to MANY appreciative persons.  The collection basket is in the narthex over the coat rack nearest to the office.

Thank you!

EXpReSS  YOURSeLF

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 8th

We are actively searching for vendors of all kinds for this sale.  For $35.00 you get a 12 x 12 booth space and to spend a great day with interesting people! Applications and details are available on the church website or you can contact me at 414-510-8503.  I would also appreciate donations such as crafts, baked goods etc. for the church’s sale, and volunteers to help me organize this and for the day of the sale.  Please consider the many ways you can be a part of this day.  All church profits go to support our children and youth! To date we have two community groups that are counting on us to help support their programs – a group of individuals who yearly raise funds to provide our veterans a Christmas Party and a family who’s  young son was tragically killed by a drunk driver who are working very hard to build “Treyton’s Field of Dreams” in his memory.  Let’s all work together help them and our vendors meet their goals!!!                 Sheryl
